Jason Bourne and the Rotring 600

Today a guest post from Rares:

I have recently watched The Bourne trilogy, after reading the books, and was surprised to see in “The Bourne Supremacy” a Rotring 600. Matt Damon (Jason Bourne in the movie) is making calls from a phone both, and uses the Rotring to take notes.

The Rotring appears 3 times during the movie but only in this scene you can clearly see it.

  1. I’m not that familiar with the series of Bourne movies, but wasn’t there one with some scenes shot in Hamburg or, perhaps, Berlin? Isn’t that a German phone book? Notice how he’s written the numbers in “German style”? But isn’t Bourne supposed to be an American?

  2. That’s a good point, Alan! I’m not sure from which scenes Rares took the screen shots, but some scenes in the first movie took place in Switzerland. To argue using the story’s logic: Jason Bourne is an American, but has been trained for all sorts of things, so he might write down the numbers German style because he wants to fit in and doesn’t want to arouse suspicions (Unlike the Michael Fassbender’s character in “Inglorious Basterds”).

  3. Jason Bourne is portrayed in the books as a killer, with a very common face that can blend in any environment, and can be easily forgotten or confused with someone else. Jason Bourne is American, so as memm mention it could be because he want’s to blend in. Or maybe is just the way Matt Damon writes, who can tell 🙂
The screenshots are taken all from the second movie in the trilogy, The Bourne Supremacy. And yes, part of the action takes place in Berlin, Munich
Cronologically the last picture in the post, is the first time the pen appears in the movie. Jason Bourne just escaped from Italian customs, and is sitting in a stolen car listening on a conversation. He is heading to Munich, then Berlin.
Second time you can see the pen is in Berlin (first image from the post). In this scene i spotted the pen because it is shown for a long time.
Jason Bourne is making calls to different hotels, to find hi’s target. He is not using a phone book but a travelers guide (i think), to take notes.
Second picture (the one with the phone book) is the last time you see the Rotring. He just arrived in Moscow, and was looking for the child of his first assignment (first kill) in the phone book.

  4. If you’ve seen the movie trilogy you already know Bourne is an unstoppable force who can fashion and wield to deadly effect weapons from the most ordinary of materials. Lucky for the bad guys they didn’t attack Jason in the phone booth. Think of the puncture wounds Bourne could inflict with his solid brass Rotring 600. Ouch.

  5. There is also a Faber-Castell Castell 9000 in the Bourne Identity–at the part where he visits his place in Paris for the first time since he was shot.

  6. What about the pen that Jason Bourne used at the beginning of the film? Looked like a Mont Blanc…

  7. Thank you for your comments. If the movies are no telly again and I’m watching them I should try to pay attention to all the details mentioned here.
